OK SO i get asked about colors a lot and i’m really sorry i am so lame at giving detailed answers SO I’M GONNA ATTEMPT TO FORMULATE SOME„, BASIC TIPS I GUESS
LET ME JUST START OUT BY SAYING i’m not really a very skilled or fancy or formally educated artist (shocking i know) and i don’t take drawing very seriously, BUT I HOPE A FEW THINGS I HAVE SAY WILL HELP YOU(extra commentary in case anything is hard to read, here is the whole thing in one pic and not an obnoxious photoset)
1. HAVE FUN WHEN YOU ARE COLORING JEEZ don’t loose hair over trying really hard to study and adsorb shading and lighting ‘ruuuules’!! and while enough basic understanding is obviously important and necessary in creating believable and realistic pieces, being creative is also really important as well!! the bottom line of art is that there ARE no rules, and if you really do want to be happy with your work, i find a lot of satisfaction arises in knowing i made something only /I/ could make!! and besides, if i didn’t have fun making art, then i wouldn’t do it, frankly
2. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT TONE YOUR COLORS PORTRAY this is especially true for people and expressions and setting
since color is such a big part of a piece, it also plays a big role in setting the tone of your work!! take a minute to evaluate the context of whatever you’re drawing and then try to see what colors would best parrallel that! and especially don’t be afraid to venture into palettes you don’t normally use!! but once you choose a palette that matches the tone of your work BE SURE TO STICK WITH IT so it is contiguous in both the background and foreground
(i used twilight princess and skyward sword as an example, i hope my analysis makes sense)
3. be sure to scribble with and test how colors look together BEFORE you take them to your lines!! and finally HAVE FUN WITH YOUR COLORING i know i already said this but it’s simply tragic when an artist becomes bored/uninterested/frustrated with colors ahhh!!! remember that every artist has different coloring styles so try you best to observe others’ techniques!! pay attention to what you like about them, but ALSO pay attention to what you dislike!!
practice a lot of styles, and ask around which programs/brush settings artists use if you find yourself interested in them!! i’m sorry i can’t help you with more technicalities, but learning for yourself is also half the fun!! plus i’m a lazy motherfucker and i’m bad a tutorials anyway

Since I assume people can’t read my mind, I’ll explain how the first version came out and why I changed it, which had nothing to do with this whitewash site that I’ve never heard of.
After I finished coloring the entire drawing in SAI, I zoomed out and thought there’s not enough color contrast around the center so I went into Photoshop and used the Dogde tool to lighten the entire upper torso plus the fire and water around there. I didn’t notice at the time because it was suppose to be a speed paint and I already spent too much time on it, but it did make her skin too light, so I changed it later when I posted it on dA. The top half of her clothes are also lighter than the official posters but that would be due to the lighting, just with like her skin and hair. If you think her skin is still not dark enough, then that’s your thing. My intuition tells me that under those lighting conditions, her entire upper body would be lighter in general.I want to emphasize that we artists are not perfect at picking out colors. Sometimes everything looks too green, sometimes too yellow and it might take a day or two of not looking at our drawing to see the problem when we look at it again (and this applies to anatomy and everything else as well). Whatever it is, it has nothing to do to green washing or yellow washing. Everyone will seem like a racist if you choose to see that as the only explanation for skin color that’s not to your liking, which is pretty racist of you btw.
In case you’re one of those people who don’t like to let things go (and it definitively seems that way) here are some character designs from my work in progress graphic novel. Dark enough for you?

If anything, Yuumei’s touched up version is even darker than these two images. I’m sure the next things you guys are going to say is that the creators are white washing too.

Hi, Anon! QUQ. OTLLLLLL. I use digital art programs to make them (Painttool SAI, Photoshop). Only drew one comic once with traditional lead pencil/inking pens because I left my tablet at home though. LOL, I’M SO BAD AT IT THOUGH. QAQ. I mainly use those art programs or just use regular mechanical pencils, micron pens, colored pencils, and copics though. I don’t draw as much anymore, but I’d like to.

If this is true, hmmmm. On one hand, I kinda ship Korra/Mako - they look good, may have promising dnamics, etc.. On the other hand, seeing people say “ZUTARA 2.0” and “BRYKE IS MAKING UP FOR THE LACK OF ZUTARA” makes me want to scream — because Korra is Korra and Mako is Mako. They are NOT Zuko and Katara of the second generation, from what we’ve seen they’re their own characters and personas, not outlets for a ship that, ultimately, didn’t sail.
I think I’ll wait a little and see if this is merely shiptease, if they do go steady, if they end up with others, etc. Hm.Lol p much.
